Cammalleri Gone? Oh No!
June 26th, 2009 by mthompsonThe genius that is Rogers Sportsnet currently has this (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/06/25/clagary_cammalleri/) as their headline story about the lack of communication between Cammalleri’s agent, Ian Pulver, and the Calgary Flames.
First, did they really misspell “calgary” in the URL? Nicccceeee…
Second, why is this news? The moment Olli Jokinen became a Calgary Flame, this outcome was obvious. And if you’re wont to look between the lines every now and then, you could surmise that preliminary discussions with between the Flames and Pulver before the trade deadline established that Cammy would be asking for more money on July 1st than the Darryl Sutter thought he was worth.
Essentially, Jokinen was brought in to replace Cammalleri.
Which makes this quote from Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos all the more laughable: “It’s gonna be tough for Calgary to replace a 40 goalscorer and especially a guy that already has such great chemisty with Iginla. They’re going to be behind the 8-ball not having Cammalleri next year.”
Well, if losing a streaky one dimensional player who doesn’t hit, backcheck, work the boards, block shots, force turnovers, turns our 50 goalscorer into a bloody playmaker, and will be overpaid in a falling cap world is being “behind the 8-ball”… then shucks, that doesn’t seem like such a bad place to be.
The only question I’m left with is this: when talk of trading Bouwmeester’s rights is all over the place, why can’t Calgary trade Cammy’s rights for a 2nd or 3rd round pick? Is it because teams aren’t tripping over themselves to dish out assets for a guy who may not sign with them anyway?
And if so, what’s so different about the Bouwmeester situation?
As far as I can tell, it’s all just media hype.
